Google unveils new tools to battle out with governments blocking internet access

Google is in plans to unveil new tools in order to make users battle out with governments which blocking internet access to its populace. The internet juggernaut has released tools to keep people around the world online and to fight for internet freedom.

“As long as people have expressed ideas, others have tried to silence them,” wrote Jared Cohen, Director of Google Ideas in a blog post. He added that in today’s world 1 out of 3 live in a society which is being severely censored. It was a reference on web barriers which filter internet content to specific users based on factors such as state, territory, country, continent, religion and so interests. Jared added in his blog post that many people have already learnt to live with it, but to those who are looking out for ways to have internet freedom, here is some good news from Google through him.

In partnership with Council on Foreign Relations and the Gen Next Foundation, Google hosted a summit in New York City early this week entitled as “Conflict in Connected World”.

The summit brought together security experts, entrepreneurs & dissidents and Google took the opportunity to unveil its new tool uProxy at this event. uProxy acts as a digital underground railroad and connects people in censored areas with a pathway to an online connection. uProxy is nothing but a browser extension and is presently under development from the past few months. If this tool gets officially released, then it will let people from US or Canada provide friends in other countries an access to barred content in their region.

‘Google Ideas’ is funding the development of uProxy taking place at University of Washington and is also being supported by Brave New Software.

Google is planning to serve its uProxy to people living in countries like Iran, Sudan, Afghanistan, China and Russia, where there is no freedom for internet access to the users residing in these regions due to government unsolicited intervention. More such tools will follow in 2014.

Note-uProxy doesn’t allow users from staying away from snooping eyes of NSA Prism Internet Surveillance.
