Western Digital, a HGST subsidiary has come up with world’s first Solid-State Drive which will have 12GBPS serial attached SCSI (SAS) interface. Aimed at high frequency trading and online transactions, these 2.5 inches enterprise class SSD drives are offered with a throughput of two and half times more than the company’s last generation SAS SSD.
Presently, WD 12GBPS SAS SSDs will be available in the capacity of 200GB to 1TB and in future there is a possibility of 2TB to 3TB capacity availability as well.
Since, SSD endurance is playing a major role in justifying a SSD product lines existence, WD 12GBPS SAS SSD are based on HGSTs multi-level cell SAS SSD family which includes Ultrastar SSD800MH, which can sustain up to 25 full drive writes per day for next five years. In the same way, Ultrastar SSD800MM and Ultrastar SSD1000MR can sustain 10 full drives writes and 2 full drives writes per daily respectively.
WD UltraStar 12GBPS SAS SSD family is said to achieve 0.44% of annual failure rate or two million hour Mean Time between Failure Rates.
Coming to maximum sequential throughput rate, UltraStar SSD800MH will have 1200MB/s reads and 750MB/s writes. When IOPS is taken into account, the product offers 145,000 reads and 100,000 sustained writes per second.
UltraStar SSD800MM will have 1200MB/s reads and 700MB/s writes. When IOPS is taken into account, the product offers 145,000 reads and 70,000 sustained writes per second.
UltraStar SSD1000MR will have 1200MB/s reads and 700MB/s writes. When its IOPS is taken into account, the product offers 145,000 reads and 20,000 sustained writes per second.
WD Ultrastar 12Gbps SAS self encrypting SSD models will be available from June 2013 and the price of these drives will be updated after their availability on an official note.
