Hackers from Russia tried to hack Hillary Clinton’s private email server’s atleast 5 times while she was secretary of State. The hackers tried their best to send malware encrypted attachments to Ms. Clinton in the name of ‘Speeding Tickets’. However, it is unclear if she clicked on any attachment and exposed her account.
Further details revealed that Clinton received the infected emails, disguised as speeding tickets, over four hours early on the morning of August 3, 2011. The emails instructed recipients to print the attached tickets, which would have allowed hackers to take control of their computers.
Security researchers who analyzed the malicious software in September 2011 said that infected computers would transmit information from victims to at least three server computers overseas, including one in Russia.
Though Ms. Hillary Clinton is apologizing for using a private email server for work- related emails, she reiterated that the usage of the personal server was not as per federal security guidelines.
But the phishing attempts highlight the risk of Clinton’s unsecure email being pried open by foreign intelligence agencies, even if others also received the virus concealed as a speeding ticket from Chatham, New York. The email misspelled the name of the city, came from a supposed New York City government account and contained a “Ticket.zip” file that would have been a red flag.
Normally, commercial antivirus software’s available in the market would have detected the software and identified it as dangerous and malicious. But out of the five attempts made by the hackers, 2 succeeded in breaching all security guidelines like firewalls and anti-virus scans and reached the inbox of Ms. Hillary Clinton.
Thus, this new revelation has deepened the controversy surrounding Clinton’s email server. And very recently, it was revealed by Mashable that the server which Clinton was using during her tenure has not been properly wiped out. Meaning, the emails and all the data hosted on that server may be recoverable. And just last week a chain of work-related emails that Clinton failed to turn over to the State Department was discovered by the Obama Administration.
This controversy is going on since March this year as the saga is quietly unraveling on weekly basis via a serious FBI probe.
