IP Video Surveillance usage has increased all around the world and that’s what is revealed from the latest numbers released by IHS research. According to the latest stats, around 566 Petabytes of data is being generated by surveillance cameras installed around the world on daily basis. And from the said amount over three quarters of data was generated by IP cameras having High Definition (HD) quality. So, this clearly suggests that as IP video surveillance technology continues to evolve, the demand for high definition video along with megapixel resolution is rising proportionately.
Historically speaking, just a few years ago, megapixel cameras were widely considered niche products for specialized applications — as they were considered to be bandwidth-hungry devices that typically required dedicated networks and lots of server space for storage.
But with the adoption of H.264 compression, the perception of users over megapixel cameras has changed dramatically. In fact, H.264 compression is up to ten times more efficient than motion JPEG when calculating bandwidth and storage requirements, which makes megapixel cameras a highly efficient means of capturing high resolution images.
But even with such quantum leaps in bandwidth efficiency and overall imaging performance, the education process to convince resellers and end-users on the benefits of megapixel imaging has taken some time to erase old perceptions.
Fortunately, the industry has turned that corner as megapixel cameras continue to deliver proof of performance for numerous applications around the globe.
According to the reports available on Google, Government and security agencies working all over the world are relying on HD based video surveillance security cameras for pinning down terrorists and their activities.
This is in contrast to few years ago, where nations like Africa, Asia and Europe were just interested in having video evidence of the activity taking place in public places like Airports, transportation hubs, government offices, educational institutions, roads and on highways.
But now, identification of faces for security forces has turned crucial under proactive circumstances, especially while identifying criminals and terrorists. And for this reason, the use of HD quality enabled security cameras is on the rise.
Government agencies around the world are trying their best to upgrade all the security cameras monitoring public places with IP based high definition and megapixel resolution cameras. By upgrading the cameras, facial recognition technology(video analytics) support can be gained with which agencies can pre-identify people who are going to involve in crime and terror attacks. Additionally, it also helps in gaining crucial video evidence to prosecute and also show to the world all those involved in crimes and massacres. Take the case of 2015 Paris attacks, where video surveillance was used to identify terrorists.
Security agencies run by governments in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Sydney, Paris, London, Rome, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Dublin, Berlin have already succeeded in the project of upgrading their surveillance deployments.
High-definition (HD) support is now regarded as the main driving force behind the surveillance market, increasing the share of network cameras (IP) and reducing the proportion of analog cameras to standard definition (SD).
However, the high cost of the IP cameras pegged with HD and MP quality is disappointing those who are willing to adopt.
But as the market thrives further, and as vendors compete in offering their best innovations to the market, products will start flocking the market.
And as the demand meets supply on a balanced note, the cost of the cameras will come down on an automatic note.
